Favorite Things Roundup

My Favorite Things - This Week's Roundup

Here are my top favorite discoveries over the past week. There really isn't a theme, just some fun stuff!

1. I get the daily email from Dog-Milk, which is absolutely awesome. If you have pets, particularly dogs go over and check it out, tons of fun!

This week they featured this incredibly fun company Arrfscarf. They started as one of those food vendor trucks on the streets of Chicago with the great twist of being for dogs!

Check out their terrific products including Doggie Ice Cream!

2. I also follow Dog-Milk's parent site Design Milk, which is also terrific and a bit addictive. I used to have a canary growing up, three in a row in fact, all named Billy. Although this cage isn't really practical for birds it is beautiful and I might just get it to have!

Voronoi Bird Cage

3. And another item featured this week:

DIY Copper Geometric Pendant Lamp, on my list of projects now!

About Design Milk, I originally started following them because the creators are located the next town over from where I grew up. Just a weird slice of home for me.

4. The next item is an incredible funny video of a photographer being "shagged by a rare parrot." A must see from the BBC

Shagged by a rare parrot - Last Chance To See - BBC Two

5. And one of my favorite moments was this weeks' win of Tottenham over Manchester City. I know most of you will not have the slightest idea of what I'm talking about it being English Premier League Football (that's soccer for most from the states). But it was a BIG DEAL!!! One of the players to score is from the states if that helps.

6. Next is a video of Ira Glass from This American Life and the comedian John Hodgman. Cracked me up. Warning - there is a bit of improper language at the end.

VIDEO: Ira Glass and John Hodgman cameo in new music video from Thao & The Get Down Stay Down

7. Another piece of media is the Terry Gross interview with David Sedaris from Fresh Air. Sedaris is interviewed regarding his new book "Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls."

Sedaris always makes me smile and this is a fun interview.

'Let's Explore': David Sedaris On His Public Private Life

8. Now a few books to share:

Frida Kahlo’s Passionate Hand-Written Love Letters to Diego Rivera - just beautiful

9. Modern Art Desserts - if you love to bake and you are an artist this is one cookbook you have to have!

'Modern Art Desserts': How To Bake A Mondrian In Your Oven

10. And finally the beautiful work of Wendy Gold and "The World is, Quiet Literally, Her Canvas

What were you're favorite things this past week? You can find more of my favorite stuff over on Pinterest!

Brenna and Nico

Saxophonist and Composer Brenna Noonan

I am simply thrilled to have a musician to share with you for Fur Friday! Brenna saw my tweet looking for creative people and their pets to feature on my blog and contacted me, I’m very glad she did! So first here’s a bit about Brenna, (she’s very impressive!).

Brenna is a North American and European performing artist. A native of Boston, MA, she began her studies at The Boston Conservatory and the Berklee School of Music. She later moved to France and studied with Jean-Denis Michat at the Conservatoire National Rayonnement de Lyon. She has performed at such venues as Boston’s Jordan Hall, Lyon’s Opéra Nouvel, and Santa Fe’s Lensic Theater. Brenna also attended the Université Européenne de Saxophone in Gap, France and the Curso Internacional de Saxofón in Montefrio, Spain. A proponent of new music, she has given premieres of new works by numerous composers. Brenna has also performed internationally alongside Claude Delangle, Dennis Shafer, and the Harlem String Quartet, among others. She has participated in several master classes, including those led by Claude Delangle, Arno Bornkamp, the PRISM Quartet, and the Quatour Habanera. Her primary saxophone teachers have been Phillipp Stäudlin, Kenneth Radnosky, and Jean-Denis Michat.

As a composer, Brenna has received commissions from artists such as percussionist Colin Woodford, saxophonist Pete Leung, and the duo Transient Canvas. She has participated in master classes with numerous composers, including Robert Lemay, Nancy Zeltsman, Sam Solomon, Tristan Murail, and Hans Abrahamsen, as well as the Del Sol String Quartet, the QX String Quartet, and the Zodiac Trio. In 2012, she scored the film “Relative,” a selection for the Cinema du Monde Film Festival in Rouen, France. Most recently, she is selected as Artist-In-Residence at the Arteles Creative Center in Haukijärvi, Finland. She studies composition with Gary Lee Nelson.

Now let’s meet Nico!

(She’s pretty impressive too! And I love that she’s named after Neko Case!)

Name: Nico
Nicknames: Freako, Neko Case
Age: 10 months
Breed: German Shepherd & Black Lab
How did your animal come to live with you? What’s her story? We adopted Nico from a family with three other dogs and four children, so needless to say they were a bit overrun! We had been planning to adopt a dog since our last, Cooper, passed away the year before. He was a Great Dane, and he was such a tremendous dog that we really wanted another Dane. However, we went to meet Nico and she was too much of a sweetheart to resist! We brought her home with us the same day.

Nico watches

Favorite toys: Nico lives for tennis balls. She also has a rolled up skin of a soccer ball that she plays with. When she carries it around, it hangs out of her mouth like a cigar.
Favorite food: Sadly, Nico’s previous owners didn’t discipline her very well (if at all), and told us her favorite food was the Big Mac! Needless to say, she doesn’t get any Big Macs at our house!
Favorite place to hang out and or sleep: We got Nico a big fluffy bed that probably any human would be happy with, so she normally camps out there.

Nico and her bed

Weirdest quirks or behavior: Nico is a little bit of a diva. She has a very wide range of attitudes and emotions, that she does not hesitate to make abundantly clear to us. One of the most obvious of these emotions is indignation, which I’m not sure I’ve ever encountered in a dog! This usually happens when we block her from getting on furniture (as she isn’t allowed), or when we’re eating delicious human food that she cannot have. She responds with a stern glare and a very specific “ROW ROW ROW!”
Pet Peeves: Besides our denying her of Big Macs and free run of our furniture, there isn’t much!
Best Tricks: She’s a very adroit catcher – I don’t think I’ve ever seen her miss a ball.
Are you a gear head with your animal, i.e. do you buy “accessories?”: Not really – Nico is very low maintenance. Really all she wants to play with are tennis balls!
If your animal was an artist or another animal who/what would he/she be?: Maybe Edie Sedgwick. They’re both beautiful and charismatic, but also a little impetuous and entitled.
If your animal has any health issues could you share and give recommendations of treatment to share with others?: Due to Nico’s aforementioned eating habits, she is a bit overweight. Not obese, but there’s certainly an extra layer of fat around her. We’ve been combating this by keeping her on a strict dry dog food only diet with frequent exercise, up to a couple of hours a day. She’s much healthier already!
How does your animal help and inspire you in your life?: As a composer, I am pretty solitary. I spend a lot of time alone cooped up in my house, working on various projects. Having a pet provides a link to the outside world during those particularly intense and reclusive times. I’m also a very nurturing person, so it brings a lot of happiness to my life being able to care for something other than myself. We’ve had pets literally my entire life; many, many dogs, but also cats, gerbils, hamsters, fish, and horses. I could never pick a favorite pet, or even a favorite species. All the animals I have known have enriched my life deeply, both as receivers and givers of love.

Nico smiles

Nico with Brenna’s siblings Katie and Will

Please take a moment and visit Brenna’s website!
Fur Friday - Jackie Curtis and Marsh!

By Evelyn McCorristin-Peters on January 25, 2013

The Welcoming Party

Jackie Curtis and Marsh

This week’s artist and her dog Marsh come to us from across the pond. Here’s a little bit about Jackie and her art in her own words:

I started to paint and draw seriously in my early teens continuing through university; producing posters and artwork for college events and magazines. My first job took me to Cumbria where I first started to use watercolors joining evening classes and finding inspiration in the fantastic landscape around me.

Bawdrip

When I moved to Somerset I became more self-sufficient painting on my own with a variety of influences from the Somerset levels, wildlife and nature, marine painting and scenes from our travels. I nearly always travel with a sketch book, paints and a camera to capture the scenes around me. I still attend the occasional course, it is good to experience new influences and meet other artists and share ideas.

I love painting with watercolors, they are so immediate and lively (although unforgiving) each color with its own properties. The colors are vibrant and can be built up to give real depth. I particularly enjoy painting water and boat scenes and love the effects of reflections in water. There is nothing better than a beautiful summer’s day with Indian Yellow for the sunlight and some strong purples in my pallet for warm shadows.

I have also become interested in printmaking and have experimented in a variety of techniques, mono, block, reduction, etc. I particularly enjoy collage prints, always on the lookout for different textures, fabrics, sandpapers and veneers to make the blocks from. The contrast in the print making and watercolor disciplines helps to keep both fresh.

ammonites 3

I participate annually in Somerset Arts Week which is a fantastic experience and it was great to discus my work with visitors and to have some feedback. I now have my own website www.jcurtisart.com. I have started to run a few print making workshops primarily for mono printing which have proved very popular.

Let’s meet Marsh!

Marsh

Name: Marsh Mallow known as Marsh
Nicknames: Yappy
Age: 13 in March
Breed: Good question – terrier – probably lots of long haired Jack Russell
How did your dog come to live with you? What’s their story? Marsh has been with us for three and a half years. He came from a couple that were splitting up and moving to small flats and there was no room for Marsh – a friend persuaded us to go and visit him and he came home with us.
Favorite toys: Things he can have a tug of war with.
Favorite food: Treats, denti sticks, bonios – if I have been to the pet shop he will sit by my bed and wait – then bark if nothing is forthcoming.
Favorite place to hang out and or sleep: He has various beds but basically he likes to be with us, not on his own. He loves going out in the car.
Weirdest quirks or behavior: How much space do you have?
He gets in his smallest basket, buries his head and then starts to chunter and bark continuously
He steels things – underwear, pens, anything really he thinks you may exchange for value (i.e. for food)
He has a real problem with matches – if you try to light a match he barks and tries to grab the matches.
He chases the lawn mower, wheelbarrow, brooms, hoover, duster.
He barks at the telephone, hammers, electric drills, staple guns….
He loves having a shower and has been known to go and sit outside the shower if he thinks he is dirty from a walk.

Pet peeves: Assuming ‘peeve’ is something he doesn’t like? Dogs that have bitten him – he remembers where they live and won’t walk by. Being left at home to ‘guard the house’.
Best tricks: Begging for food sitting on his hind legs.
Are you a gear head with your dog, i.e. do you buy “accessories”? No!
If your dog was an artist who would he/she be? I don’t know who but it would involve sculpture using destroyed things – pens, pencils, lighters, pill boxes.
If your dog has any health issues could you share and give recommendations of treatment to share with others? He is very fit no problems.

Pig

How does your dog help and inspire you in the studio?
He isn’t really a help in the studio – he doesn’t like me being outside in the studio – he barks at the back door to come out; when I come to let him out he turns round and goes back into the front room hoping I will follow.
He loves ‘Open studio events’ – he likes to sit with us in the garden waiting for visitors – hoping to be fussed. See picture ‘The welcoming party’ – only problem is he tends to bark if he’s not fussed.
The real inspiration comes from dog walks – inspiration for my pictures often comes from our walks – I am nearly always armed with a camera; and sometimes sketch/paint on my walks, I also collect seed heads etc. and beach comb and use materials directly in my print making in mono prints and collagraphs as well as using them as subject matter e.g ammonites.

Thanks so much to Jackie and Marsh for sharing their stories! Make sure to visit Jackie’s website to see more of her beautiful work! You can also follow her on Twitter!

Please share with your art loving and pet loving friends! If you’re interested being featured on Fur Friday, give me a tweet!

Stay tuned next week for saxophonist and composer Brenna Noonan and her dog Nico!
