The term "Bollywood" comes from combining the name of the city Bombay, now called Mumbai, and Hollywood. Bollywood refers to India's most well-known style of film that features energetic and elaborate dance sequences and upbeat soundtracks.
Originally, Bollywood films were only found in places that regularly consumed Indian films. However, in the past few decades, the international appeal of Bollywood films has grown and Bollywood's signature style of music and dancing have come into a global spotlight. With the success of films such as Slumdog Millionaire, Bollywood films have gained increasing popularity with American, Canadian, and European audiences. Whether it's the lavish sets, extravagant costumes, or larger-than-life aesthetics, elements of Bollywood films have found their way into the stage shows, music and videos of stars such as Shakira, Madonna, and Britney Spears.
