This limited edition giclee print of an original watercolor painting is from my series entitled “Everyday Use” (named after a short story by Alice Walker) which celebrates the traditional arts of women, and in particular quilts.
In rural Wisconsin I was raised surrounded by people who quilted, crocheted, and did fine woodworking, but I was not taught to think of these needle workers as artists because the art they created was not made to be placed in a museum or on a wall. Rather it was intended an everyday use. Today I see these creators as artists. The series celebrates their art.
The original watercolor is called "Tossed by the Sea Storm," and is in a private collection. It is inspired by a quilt pattern of the same name. The pattern seems to be made up of sail boats. I hope to evoke the sea breeze.
A giclee print is a high-end digital print. The inks are archival and the watercolor paper on which they are printed is 100% rag.
