Never Say Never

I always said I would never get into craft! Well, I never thought I would either - it's strange how things work out.

Whatever I have taken on has always had to be useful, for example, I couldn't do something like pottery or mosaics because there's only so much of that stuff you can use and "what do you do with the rest?". My mum used to make covered coathangers - I didn't use them so why would I make them. A cousin of mine makes lace - I wouldn't do that because I don't particularly like lacy things. And yet ... here I am years later making crochet toys!! What am I going to do with all these toys I'm making???

Sell them, that's what!! Why didn't I think of this years ago??

My talent (if you call it that) started a long, long time ago - I learned to knit at a very early age, in fact I can't actually remember when I started but my knitting continued for years and my kids will probably say that I tortured them by making them wear hand knitted jumpers. They don't remember that all the other kids had hand knitted jumpers because that's what everyone did back then - it was cheaper to knit/make clothes than it was to buy them and besides, it was something to brag about that your mum could do that sort of thing.

When home made clothes became 'uncool', the knitting needles were put in moth balls for a while. In the 70's crochet clothes became the rage, I discovered that it was much quicker to crochet something 'fashionable' to wear. As someone once told me, it doesn't matter how much you have to undo to correct a mistake, you still only have to pick up one stitch.

In later years, crochet remained my preferred method and mostly consisted of baby clothes, shawls etc and more recently has extended to afghans, throw rugs and an on-going attempt at a bedspread crocheted with 4 ply cotton.

I'm still not sure how the latest craze started, but it has kept me busy and entertained in my semi-retirement.

At this stage, I'm not sure who will buy these things but I really hope someone likes them enough to maybe give them as a gift for a special occasion or just for no reason at all.

Posted by Art Gluttony's Mum, Chris
