DIY Paper Flocking on a 3D Daisy Birthday Cake Card

I've been seeing flocking all over the stores (and some ingeniously decorated nails). It's kind of like colored, fluffy, cotton candy, but in teeny pieces. I didn't want to buy more things, so my first thought was can I make my own? Yes I can!

I borrowed the microfine shredder from the kitchen, wadded up some paper scraps from Daiso, and shredded away. In case I didn't cover everything, I used the same color yellow as a backing, covered it in glue and dipped into my paper flocking (tweezers are helpful!). Then I glued it to my daisy flower, which then decorated my 3D cakes.

Ever get those birthday cakes topped with plastic signage? I kind of wanted to replicate that for this birthday girl's card. I stacked the words 4 times out of card stock to make my own chipboard, just like I did for the LOVE sculpture. This time I made the top layer out of a lighter green so when it's viewed from the side, it gives another dimension - just a little something different. I stuck foam squares near the top so they stick up, then glued the bottom part behind the daisies.

Her fave color is yellow and since my original cake was too short to let me go nuts on the decorating, I made it twice as tall. I always place my elements on my card to assess the spacing before gluing permanently. Although I thought everything was well placed, it ended up being lower than I intended when I stood back. So I added the fireworks I used on my Mickey Mouse project to fill the top. I feel like I overdid that too, but ah well, I'll live.

3D Birthday Cake with Shaped Die Punched Flowers

She is feminine without being girly. I wanted to give her a 3D birthday cake card that expressed that (I hadn't chosen my greeting yet when I took this photo).

I cut some 1/8" quilling strips in half which made them more pliable as I decorated the cake. This let me strew blossoms in a more random way. I used a white felt marker to dot some stamens in the middle of the blossoms.

I used single die punches to make all the flowers. To shape, visit my blog for more information: http://craftingcreatures.blogspot.ca/2013/04/shaping-die-punch-flowers.html

Match their wedding theme colors with ribbons and a scalloped edge background.

A 2-layer cake with dressy swooshes is perfect for that milestone anniversary. Use the classic diamond background which also allows for a message in the middle.

Bubbly birthday wishes can be sent using a 1-layer cake, which leaves lots of room for any message you’d like in the front.

Protect your well wishes in a clear windowed box with easy-open tabs.

MATERIALS
The cake and stand can be cut from medium 70lb text weight paper to heavier 80lb cover stock. The icing shown here is made from self adhesive vinyl but can easily be made with colored paper and glue. The cards are 5x7 inches and cut from heavy cardstock. Lineco Neutral PH Adhesive was used for all assembly except for the window, which used Scotch Quick-Dry Adhesive.

A Silhouette die cutter was used to cut all boxes seen here. Results may vary with different die cutters. Hand cutting is not suggested due to tiny details.

FILES
1) Single, double, and triple layer cake
2) Two types of icing (dots and swoosh)
3) Cake stand
4) Card backgrounds: scallop, diamonds, dots
5) Cake box with window cut out
6) Assembly instructions with detailed photos in PDF

FORMATS
1) SVG (for MTC and SCAL)
2) DXF (for KNK)

TERMS OF USE
http://craftingcreatures.blogspot.ca/p/terms-of-use.html

Please contact me if you have any questions. This is the first ATC I've ever made. Of course I'd use a combo of die cutting and quilling, and somehow express who I am. What I like the most is how the owl puffs up simply with a folded half moon on the top of his head.

These paper blossoms are designed as a fringed flower to be quilled into shape. The stamen, petals, and leaves are designed as one strip of paper to allow for quick rolling / quilling. Color markers were used on white 28 lb paper in these examples, however they can be cut from colored paper and the three parts glued into one strip.

The pine needle wreath is cut from two pieces of 80 lb paper and overlapped, then fluffed into shape to give the poinsettias a festive base. Add a bow and your Christmas greeting card is set. A windowed box protects and displays your 3D masterpiece.

Use the cubed box for party favor treats at that special party. The lid is prepared with a hole for the enlarged poinsettia to be inserted. The large poinsettia is split in half to make it easier to cut on a sheet of 8.5"x11" paper. A gift tag is also included so you can have it all match your scrapbook paper.

Need to warn guests of spicy foods or ones that contain nuts? Use the toothpick tag topped with a poinsettia to have it match all your decor.

Visit my blog to be inspired by a monogram of the letter E that I made for a friend:
http://craftingcreatures.blogspot.ca/2011/01/quilled-e-monogram.html

The examples shown here were cut on a QuickKutz Silhouette SD - results may vary depending on machine.

FILES
1) Poinsettias - Regular and Large
2) Wreath
3) Display Box with Window
4) Party Favor Cube
5) Toothpick Tag and Gift Tag

FORMATS
1) SVG (for Sure Cuts A Lot / SCAL software)
2) DXF (for Klic-N-Kut with KNK Studio software)
3) MTC (for Make-the-Cut)

* NOTE for MTC users: Import the SVG files using 72 DPI and ensure "Use Actual" is checked.

TOOLS YOU WILL NEED
· slotted quilling tool
· alcohol based markers (optional)
· glue, toothpicks, tweezers, scissors, pencil, pins

There are no tabs to cut as for boxes, the shape is very pleasing and unusual, and provides a nice surface for a message.

Your feedback keeps me going.
