Meylah: You graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Apparel Design and Textiles. Did you always know you were going to build your own business making handbags and accessories?
Crystalyn: I had been sewing since I was very young, but I actually thought I wanted to be a buyer for a fashion retailer. My senior year of college, I studied abroad and had an internship in the buying office at Liberty in London, UK. We would go to designers’ workshops and studios and see the new collections they were working on. Being able to go behind the scenes really demystified the idea of being a designer and it gave me the confidence that I too could one day start my own collection.
Meylah: Did you sell initially at markets and craft shows and evolve into selling online and in boutiques?
Crystalyn: Yes, I first started out selling my designs at the Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle, and began selling to local boutiques. Then I founded a small artist collective in a retail shop for 4 years, but it really wasn't until I built my website that things really began to take off.
Meylah: Do you have any advice for other artists trying to sell their products to retailers?
Crystalyn: Have a professional-looking pricelist and line sheet (1 page brochure) with you at all times. You never know when you'll meet someone who knows a shop owner. Be persistent but not pushy. Make sure you can create enough products to be able to meet the demand of orders. Being out of stock will quickly make shop owners lose confidence in you. Be organized with invoices & payments.
Meylah: You manage a blog/website and stores on Etsy and 1000 Markets, as well social media accounts on Facebook and Flickr, how has your online presence impacted your business?
Crystalyn: Keeping up with my own website & blog is a lot of work in itself, and I use my Etsy, 1000 markets, Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter accounts as additional ways for me to broaden my customer base. That being said, it can be overwhelming to keep up with all the formats, and sometimes it prevents me from spending as much time in my studio as I like. My advice to those just starting out: I would suggest starting out on 1000 markets because you have the easy format to build your online site, post blog entries, and send out newsletters all in one spot.
Meylah: How do you juggle your time between making your products, selling at events and maintaining your presence online?
Crystalyn: It has been incredibly difficult to find the right balance between creating, marketing and customer service. During the holiday season I feel like I am just 'putting out fires' (answering the phone, shipping orders, updating the website) but in the slower months I like to spend Mondays doing email & customer service. Tuesdays are spent on marketing, website updating, photography and Wednesday & Thursdays sewing new bags. I try to make Fridays my 'creative day' where I only work on experimenting with new ideas for bags.
Meylah: Which one of your handbags is the most popular and which one do you personally use the most?
Crystalyn: My most popular bag has been the Soirée Messenger Bag. It has been a best-seller since I introduced it 5 years ago, and it has become the trademark 'crystalyn kae' bag. It gives me the most joy to create because every one is unique. I like to keep a pleated clutch inside my purse, with my wallet, keys, lipgloss inside and then toss inside a Soiree Pleated drawstring. The long adjustable strap on the bag keeps my hands free when I am carrying packages to the post office, or I can pull out the clutch to use when I'm meeting friends for drinks after work.
Meylah: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Crystalyn: Being able to make a living doing what you absolutely love is the most wonderful feeling. I also enjoy the flexible schedule...I love to sleep in and not have to keep 'regular hours'.

I am so glad you are eco-friendly. Do you make wallets?
Hi Crystalyn, I know I’m not available to win the gift, but I wanted to tell you that I am so impressed with your work and you have given me an easy choice this year for Christmas as my wife can’t stop talking about you and your amazing handbags.
I would love to see a red velvet clutch with a large bow on it – it would be so festive for Christmas
WOW. Is there anything else I need to say?
These bags are amazing! They are so unique, fun and classy. I would love to see you design a tote that could double as a diaper bag. I’ll admit that my diaper bag doubles as my purse on most days of the week, so it’d be wonderful if it looked more fashionable. A washable fabric or recycled leather is a must! =)
Dear Santa,
Please bring me a black shiny clutch with two outside pockets, one for my I-Phone and another one for my keys!
Love your handbags. It would be fun to see one with Black leather and a Zebra print.
I am in LOVE with your Burgundy Metier Tote! The lines are so clean! The bag is classy, stylish, and functional, perfect for stiletto heels on the go! I would love to see an animal print on the inside lining of the bag and the pockets, like a soft micro suede giraffe print in a corresponding color. The irony of an eco-friendly bag sporting the beauty of the animal… Look: We CAN live in harmony with nature, still loving and appreciating all of it’s beauty without causing actual harm to any of God’s creatures!
These are really beautiful!
Crystalyn – love your bags, especially the Purple and Black Tweed Tote – Troubadour (purple being my favorite color). Have you thought of doing a backpack type of bag? Other than that, I would like to see more wallet sizes in bright colors. Blessings, Teresa
Wow! Thanks Crystalyn. Your clutch is a great idea to change bags without fuss. I love the style’s you highlighted today, I really like their size as well.
i would love to see something of a messanger bag that can fit a laptop as well as a wallet or another clutch… perhaps two pockets on the outside to hold cell phone or perhaps boarding passes as i travel ALOT... perhaps a white leather like fabric for a clutch… somethign for a wedding type… LOVE YOUR WORK!!!
I love this maylah blog promo idea – beacuse we get to see such wonderful products! I love the Metier Work Tote in Red on her site – red is my favorite color and I carry around notebooks and sketchbooks, so it is just my style. Thanks for making such quality products Crystalyn :)
I own a clutch and just ordered another bag that I can’t wait to get! I would like to see additional base colors like turquoise! These are amazing pieces of art!
Crystalyn,
I love your creativity. Perfect for any occasion. I am placing the order now :) thanks for offering coupon to make it easy for me to take action.
Stylish yet useful!
Slick yet carries good karma!
Pricey yet actually affordable!
Cool Stuff!
These look like really nice items. Eco-friendly, too! Great job.
Crystalyn – Your messenger bag is the most stylish I have ever seen! I love your other styles as well and the only thing I can suggest is a craft bag (wide opening with no zippers or hardware that snags). I’ve been coveting a Namaste Inc.-like craft bag since I saw them on Knitting Daily.
I need the gray…or purple… tweed foxtrot ASAP. I’d love to see more bags made out of re-purposed materials as well as the continued use of awesome, but animal friendly materials… maybe a (carry-on) luggage line… :)
WOW! Beautiful and so unique!!! Can I have them all please? A darling handbag is such a Must-Have! I love your style.
i’d love to see a royal purple bag with stitched accents and lined in a muted gold fabric with a pattern that contrasts the outside color. A bag I can travel with!
I LOVE these bags! Thanks for a chance at the giveaway.
Crystalyn – I love the Black Métier Tote!!! This is ideal for the working woman. Since I carry carry my laptop to and from work daily this is ideal so I don’t have to carry a purse and my laptop bag; and I can just through my wallet or smaller purse inside. Great design!
I L*O*V*E the Geisha Romance!!! I’d love to see small change / key purses!
I dont carry a purse, just a clutch now that i can throw in diaper bag! I love these swoon
wow! thank you all for your lovely comments! I had so much fun reading all the product suggestions. . . keep the feedback coming! I love hearing from you!
Hi Crystalyn. Your bags are gorgeous and congrats on your success! I love the small black and red clutch. Would love to see it in more color combinations!
